I Must Have Pissed Somebody Off

5:46 pm Uncategorized

At times I’m a blunt blogger. I pride myself on being opinionated, raw and “gonzo”-like in my scribblings.

I’m of the stream-of-consciousnesses school of writing, where short staccato writing (influence: James Elroy) gets me through the day. I get too easily bored by trying to write the perfect sentence, the perfect paragraph and so forth. Screw that shit!

I’m also of the “gonzo” school of writing (influence: Hunter S.) where pretty much anything goes.

I also like to call a spade a spade, a knucklehead a knucklehead and a fuckwit a fuckwit … it’s all part of my charm. :-)

So I must have really pissed somebody off big time because I’ve probably received more spam in the last 24 hours then I have over the last 17,520 hours (That’s 2 years) - and I’m not kidding!.

So to the fuckwit(s) who’s doing this, I may not or just may know who you are. There are ways. So I won’t let on if I’m following and recording every move - just don’t get too upset/surprised/shit your pants when you get that knock on the door. ;-)

Be warned!

Do you have Google Alerts on that email account, Martin?

It happened to me last week and seems to be a flaw in Google Alerts.

  2. Martin Neumann Says:

No John - I have a separate email account for my G Alerts. These are all coming to me via the same domain name *******@theblogcolumnist.com and they’re all pure spam eg: loan approved, pics, pdf, doc attached, lots of bounced emails etc., thousands to be precise.

I’m being bounced by some big ISPs and major corporations (whom I haven’t dealt with) so I’m guessing it’s someone tying to get me blacklisted for that domain.

Stupid thing is I’m never going to use that domain for any emailing purposes. :-)

Anyway, I’ve got some intense techie friends looking into it and give them some free pizzas and diet cokes and they love this sort of snooping around. :-)

They probably have a few computers that have been turned into zombies by spammers.

  4. Martin Neumann Says:

Hey - that’s the first thing my techie friends said to me. :-)

And now I’m google cramming (I know the very basics) on all things spamming/zombies.

Just a personal thought from my own experience, maybe right, maybe wrong, but worth consideration…

You might be getting spoofed. I.E. someone faking the headers on their spam to make it look like its coming from you and it isn’t but you have the “pleasure” of getting all the returns because “their” list ain’t worth crappola.

Extremely aggravating for me but my host was an absolute god-send!

  7. John Evans (Syntagma) Says:

Mark, you’re spot on. I just checked our spam and they’re using @syntagmamedia.com to send the spam out. We’re getting the bounced returns. It seems to be latest ruse.

  8. Martin Neumann Says:

Mark - I think you hit it on the head. That’s the majority view from everyone who’s had a look at all these emails.

Just so surprising that the email system is really this fragile.

John - identity theft of a domain name as you say on your post is fairly easy to do (which is a scary thought), hence why they’re starting to throw these people (spammers) into jail for long terms.

  9. Mark Says:

If it continues and it is a spoof, you can wind up with your own spam complaints. So, if you haven’t already done it, contact your host and talk with them about the situation and then make sure you and your host have a catch-all set-up. That is what worked for me.

Good luck to both of you…
