I’m a WordPress Junkie

Did you know that I’m a WordPress junkie.

Yup, I started off blogging with Blogger and thought that was the best thing out there. I kept hearing about this WordPress thing. It was free but it was more powerful - hence more to learn and more to screw up on.

That was early-2005. I eventually made the move and haven’t looked back since.

Today, I absolutely adore WordPress and what it lets me do.

I can be a full-featured publisher at next to no cost. I’m also noticing a lot more resources popping up across the web. WordPress has a thriving community, as can be seen by all the plugins and themes being made and released, and now we are seeing more blogs specifically on WordPress. Widgets I’m not so sure about.

Tip: If you have a knack for designing, you can almost guarantee yourself a lifetime of link love by designing and giving away a few free WordPress themes.

Here are some useful WordPress links that might be of interest:

Blogging Pro
A long time favorite, David keeps me up-to-date on all the latest WordPress news, plugins and themes. BTW, I read that the blog is getting a much needed fresh paint of coat very soon.

Lorelle on WordPress
This is a blog I’ve just recently come across - it’s part of 9rules and is all class. Lots of quality WordPress stuff to check out there. I’ve got so much to read over there.

WPPlugins.org
This is a new site that highlights and ranks WordPress plugins. This site has great potential - just needs a while to fill it up with plugins galore. I’ve already snapped up a few useful plugins.

The WordPress Podcast
As for a WordPress podcast, I’ve recently come across this one which looks very exciting. Lots of topics discussed - I’ve come in at Episode 6 and the show notes reveal it’s feature packed. And for a new podcast it’s already getting downloaded hundreds of times.

One thing: the host’s robotic speaking style is too flat for my liking - maybe a co-host could liven it up a little. There’s hardly a pause between items. Hopefully he can kick it up a beat or three as he gets more comfortable in front of the mic.

There’s so much more out there, but one must have limits. Oh, okay … if you know of a cool WordPress resource let me know in the comments.

Finally: What’s going on with the Shuttle project? Is it ever going to take of the ground???

    Ouch! :)

Hey Charles … other than that it’s a perfect show. :)

But hey, at least you have the courage to podcast - I’m just an armchair critic.

Keep it up, cause this is a really good podcasting idea - and I’m a listener from now on. I actually love the Southern drawl - adds a bit of character. Who cares if you fluff up some names, that’s part of the charm.

BTW, great first interview - I just listened to it.

Seriously, I know I need to work on the delivery. Episode 4 was an attempt at having co-hosts and I didn’t care for the results enough to continue trying it. Episode 5 (or was it 4?) was an attempt to work off a minimal script and I didn’t like it either.

I either need to hand it over to an attractive geek-girl and turn it into a videocast, record everything very slowly and speed it back up in editing or just improve my speaking habits. :)

    Charles,

Great post about being a Wordpress junkie. I run a blog as well and enjoy the flexibilty it provides. I really do like the theme you have for the site. I downloaded the same one and want to try it out. How did you get the image for the header? I’m average when it comes to fiddling with editing the theme but putting a image as a header is a bit more tough. Could you help me out? Thanks a lot.

Charles … I don’t think you need to do too much - just a little tweak here and there. Just do it via trial and error - what works keep it, what doesn’t dump it.

With the speaking issue, I’d suggest just keep doing it - you’ll develop your own character/voice over time - remeber, this is still new.

One thing: have fun doing it, it’ll bring out a natural flavor.

Hey Benny … I presume you’re talking to me (the author of this post) and not Charles. ;)

If not, forget this comment. :)

For a header just use any image program and make a header with whatever you like - font’s images, colour - just go by trial and error. Mine is 884×183pixels. Save it either as gif, jpg or png.

Once you have a header and have uploaded it go into the Dashboard > Presentation > of youe WP Admin and select the header template - replace what’s in the header div with your img.

Hope that helps a little. I’m no great designer, more a tinkerer and I just go by trial and error - lots of errors but I’m getting there. :)

LOL!! Sorry about that Martin. I just saw the first post and it said Charles and that name stuck. Thanks for the help. I’ll try that out and let you know.

There are tons of resources out there for WP Bloggers, and more content being created everyday. They also have a great IRC channel on the freenode network called #wordpress :)
