Is Technorati useless?

8:46 pm Digg, StumbleUpon, blogosphere, darren rowse, problogger, technorati

And my answer to that is … Yes!

They’ve been around a while in blogging terms and showed so much promise, but really … have delivered little. Putting it plain and simple: it’s not a reliable system and hasn’t been for a long time. And to be honest with you, I don’t understand how it has survived so long.

I get little traffic via them, their pinging of my posts (and many others) is like rolling dice and to be honest with y’all - Google’s Blog Search, together with del.icio.us, does a better job.

And now Technorati are smack-bang in the middle of yet another blog flareup: The Technorati Favorites Exchange thingy.

I know … I know … scroll down a post or two and you’ll see that I got slightly involved. Nothing major just a few here and there, see what all the fuss is about.

Darren Rowse, famous from his blog, Problogger.net, had his say on the matter here and here once it all got heated and started to get personal.

Some raised their eyebrows at his “sad” comment but lets face it, folks … it is a little sad that we are essentially trying to jump the queue and scramble to the top via any which way we can. That’s what happens in an over-saturated market where everyone is trying to rise above the clutter … it’s human nature.

And let’s face it. Gaming is alive and kicking in the blogosphere (think: Digg) and now it’s Technorati’s turn to get the full treatment.

Personally, I think that gaming of any system (eg: Digg, StumbleUpon, Reddit etc) devalues the service being gamed. That’s why I think so little of such services and Top-whatevers.

What’s worse is that Technorati has not responded to it, either way. In this age of instant communication, you’d expect a company thats business is the blogosphere to be right out there laying down the law of what one can or cannot do … ie: communicating.

Why would Technorati care about a little game like this? Links only count for the last 6 months anyway in Technorati’s ranking.

And if the game would get really big, almost every blogger would participate and everything would level again. Some link/technorati/popularity whores don’t destabilize a structure like Technorati.
No matter if it’s a stable one or not. ;-)

I’m glad I was away busy working and missed all the hooplah - I hate Technorati for good reasons.

Hi there. I found you (ironically) through a mutual favorite: Mind of an Outboard Geek

Even though you’re not keen on Technorati (for some decent reasons) I have to say I am really excited about it right now. I get close to half my traffic from Technorati most days.

In case you like my blog, I’d ask you to favorite me . . . if for nothing else: OLD TIMES’ SAKE

    Thanks for the post
