Top 9 Money Earners from the ProBlogger

5:28 pm Uncategorized

Darren over at ProBlogger posts an interesting post that will have people talking and thinking.

In How I Make Money from Blogs - My Top Earners Darren gives us a fairly good look at how he earns an income through blogging.

I notice that this time around he doesn’t put a dollar amount on anything - good! Because all you’ll get by doing that is the nutters and those who are envious come out of the woodwork and bug you silly. Personally, I don’t like it when others give out an exact amount of what they have earned - but that’s just me.

Darren’s top earners are:

  • CHITIKA
    ideal for product-related blog.
  • ADSENSE
    a reliable long-time earner.
  • TEXT LINK ADS
    the biggest mover.
  • AMAZON ASSOCIATES
always big during the Xmas season.
  • PRIVATE AD DEALS
    not many, but highly lucrative
  • MISC. AFFILIATE PROGRAMS
must be very relevant to the blog topic.
  • PROBLOGGER JOBBOARDS
    paying for itself.
  • PERFORMANCING PARTNERS NETWORK
    showed potential but now dead.
  • BLOGADS
    decreasing rather rapidly.

A few observations…

More bloggers should seriously take the time and look at doing private ad deals or sponsorships. From personally experience (not blogging) I’ve found that getting at least one “name” brand on board usually brings in others, and fairly quickly too.

I also must echo Darren’s view on Text Link Ads. For me, they have been the big mover (by far) for a steady (but limited) income.

One thing Darren left out (or forgot) was where on the list his info product (Six Figure Blogging) came. I have a slight interest in information products. Darren?

I don’t mind posting my earnings .. although I’ve only posted the annual figure, not the monthly. I’ve been debating a graph of some sorts for 2007 on H-E.N. I think it’s beneficial to others who are trying and starting from scratch to see that it’s not an easy get-rich-quick scheme (blogging) but persistence can pay off. Sure, it might be ’slightly’ .. but everybody has to start somewhere. What’s the difference if little ole me is describing how I am making money than the CEO of a large company describing how he is making money or a Problogger? It’s all good to a point.

Darren’s not the only game in town making money. I’ve picked up a few tips and tricks directly from other blog owners who published their own stats and earnings .. and I would see something new that made me want to do a “Tool Time with Tim” grunt … Ennhhh? .. like alternatives to text-link advertising or competitors, domain parking, etc ..

    Hey Hart,

AH, the Home Improvement grunt. :-)

I see your point about announcing figures - but I think the way Darren has gone about it is just fine, maybe he should put a % figure on each.

The only reason I see somebody announcing their exact monetary figures is to try and sell their expertise (ie: I made this amount of money, so I must be good - now buy my product) or it’s just a pure ego thing.

I recall Darren having serious trouble a year or so ago when he did put dollars to his earnings posts and out came the whackos and even a stalker.

This is just me, but I run an online publishing firm with many properties. I don’t feel the need to announce my earnings - I don’t see the point of it. I’m a private company and as long as I stay private everything financial stays private.

The reasoning behind this is that I’m not out there to directly help people make money the way I do. Why give a leg-up to other potential competitors.

But then I do appreciate the one’s who do tell - so I can see if there are any trends emerging or I’m missing out on some earnings avenue.
