Paul Merson backs Liverpool to win their maiden Premier League title

Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson has backed Liverpool to win their maiden Premier League title this season. The Merseyside outfit have not played to the best of their abilities over the past four league games but they have nonetheless remained unbeaten and they are presently six points ahead of holders Manchester City at the top of the standings.

Speaking on Sky Sports, Merson said that the gap between the Reds and the Citizens remains significant and Jurgen Klopp’s side need to continue with their consistent run of results without worrying about the performances of the reigning champions, he told: “The gap is still six points and that’s still a lot. Forget about where Manchester United are, that was always going to be a difficult game for Liverpool.

“It’s the biggest game of the season for both teams so neither side is lying down for the other. Liverpool found a way to get back into the game, and it’s the sort of game you’ll look back on later in the season and think that was a big point. They just have to worry about themselves. That’s all you can do. They’ve got to keep going and they are still favourites in my eyes.”

The Reds have been defensively vulnerable at certain stages of the current league season and they have remained unbeaten. Over the weekend, they had the chance to match Manchester City’s 18-match winning streak in the league but that was not the case as they settled for a 1-1 draw against Manchester United at Old Trafford.

Next up, they have a home game against Tottenham Hotspur and they are favourites for the encounter, given Spurs have looked out of sorts over the past few games. Still, the north London side have proved stubborn opposition in the recent past and Klopp will be aware of the need for more aggression from his players from the off.
